Radical Possibilities with La Plata County Youth Services!
Radical Possibilities is an intentional, skilled, and well-supported mentorship program between high school seniors/college students and middle school students. It is designed to support youth into feeling empowered, having the resources they need to strengthen their well being and thrive in their everyday lives. (Paraphrase of Program manager Miranda Day’s description of the program). Radical Possibilities and La Plata Youth Services face real world injustice in the lives of children head-on. Providing as many resources as they possibly can to support and protect youth. Radical Possibilities in particular pairs college students/high school seniors with youth that are at risk due to factors that are mainly out of their control. In order to build a mentoring relationship that helps support the youth through the issues that they have no one to turn to about. I believe this organization as a whole tackles the injustice youth face and fight for their justice!
I was selected to be a mentor for this year’s Radical Possibilities program, and it has been one of the greatest opportunities of my life. Over the course of this past semester, I haven’t had a mentee, and have only been attending the mentor trainings, which in and of themselves are a true gift, and will be continuing with a mentee next semester. I have been able to learn so much about mental health and youth, and communication this last semester that I will carry into my future career, and into my life. I have dug deep into setting emotional boundaries when it comes to my mentee, which is something I knew would become a problem in my future career of choice. I am just so beyond grateful for this opportunity, and experience!
